Training
Tenchijin Ryaku No Maki
The Tenchijin Ryaku No Maki is a collection of named techniques and parts of techniques from the 9 classic Ryu-ha that encompass the Bujinkan. They are selected as the basic things that one should know and train from beginning until Yondan, 4th degree black belt. There are only 3 belts within the Bujinkan system. White belt, 10th Kyu, indicates a beginner. After training for a short time, practioners are promoted to Green belt, 9th Kyu to 1st Kyu. Then they are promoted to Black belt which starts at 1st Dan and goes to 10th Dan. There are 5 additional levels within 10th Dan which have over time have become to be known as 11th to 15th Dans.

The picture above is of Shihan Joseph Adriance's book which covers the Ten and Chi levels of the Tenchijin Ryaku No Maki. It breaks down the things you should know for each of the Kyu ranks in order to become a black belt. It is available on Lulu.com. There is a new book in the works which will cover the Jin level for 1st to 4th Dan. There are many books and DVD's done by Soke Masaaki Hatsumi which are also highly recommended.
Godan
(5th degree black belt)
A 1st Dan to a 4th Dan is known as a Shidoshi-ho, assistant teacher. A 5th Dan to 9th Dan is known as a Shidoshi, Teacher of the way. A person of 10th Dan to 15th Dan is known as a Shihan, Great Teacher. To become a 5th Dan you must pass the 5th Dan test which is usually given by Soke Hatsumi or a Senior Shihan in the presence of Soke Hatsumi. It involves having the person giving the test standing with a Shinai or Bokken behind the student who is kneeling in Seiza with their eyes closed. Without warning the tester cuts downward and the student needs to sense the intent of the attack and roll away. If they are successful they become 5th Dan.
